Pillow cases are covers that are designed to be slipped over pillows. There are a number of reasons to use pillow cases, ranging from the desire to maintain a hygienic environment to a cheap way to switch up interior décor. There are a wide range of styles and types of pillow cases available in the market today. One of the best and most popular are Egyptian cotton pillow cases. Egyptian cotton is mostly made from a cotton plant called gossypium barbadense.
This high quality cotton is known for its ability to create extra long staples, or fibers. These fibers can produce thread that is thinner than other types of cotton because of their longer length. Thinner threads will result in a higher thread count. Thread counts measure the number of threads in one square inch of material. The higher the thread count is, the more luxurious the material will feel. Because the threads in Egyptian cotton pillow cases are longer and closer together, they are more durable and softer to the touch.
Keeping it Clean
A body pillow is an oversized pillow that is designed to support the body during sleep and rest. There are different designs and fillings for body pillows intended to meet different physical needs. A standard sized pillow case won’t be able to cover these large pillows which is why body pillow covers were created. They are specially made to encase the pillow, protect it, and make it more comfortable and safe to use.
In addition to the growing selection of retail body pillow covers, patterns for sewing these covers have emerged. For a fairly good sewer, these covers are easy to make and can be created from any sturdy and washable fabric. The best thing about making your own body pillow covers is the ability to customize them to coordinate with existing bedding as well as room décor. Flannel and cotton are still the most popular choices for body pillow covering material.
Protection for Pillow
The use of pillow cases protects the pillow from stains, sweat and other fluids while asleep. It provides a soft, breathable layer of material for our head and face while sleeping. The standard style is rectangle which envelopes the pillow and has a slit on one end. The envelope style has a panel of fabric that folds under via the backside of the pillow, tucked in out of sight. The buttoned and tied style secures the pillow inside the case to prevent the ends and edges of the flap from fluttering.
It is important to change pillow case often. It is a good way to reduce dust mites and other bacteria. Invest in cases with a high thread count. A higher thread count material can absorb more of the oils and bacteria that we want to avoid. Wash with less detergent and rinse twice.
Of Pillows and Pillowcases
When we think of pillows, the first image that comes to mind is the rectangular bed pillow. The image will have an accompanying idea of how it feels. Depending on the preference of the person, it could be soft and cuddly, hard to the feel or something in between. Our imagination stops there. But it should not.
There are many other forms of pillows. There are body pillows, neck pillows, travel pillows and pillows specifically prescribed to relieve bone disorders. Each of these pillow types will have particular uses. Each will also have a different kind of pillow case. Pillowcases are made according to the shape and size of pillows.
Advantages of Satin Pillow Cases
Satin is a material that has a glossy surface and a dull back. In earlier days satin was exclusively woven from silk fibers. Currently they are being made from nylon and polyester as well. Aside from its glossy appearance satin is also sought after because it is soft to the touch. The gloss and softness of the material is the result of a special weaving process.
Satin is commonly used in the production of women’s apparel including lingerie, nightgowns, blouses and evening gowns. It is also much in demand in men’s shirts and neckties. Home decorating has found use for it in the form of draperies, upholstery and beddings. Satin pillow cases and bed sheets have always been considered the epitome of comfort and elegance when it comes to bed linens. They are also believed good for the skin and hair.
