Down comforters are made from down feathers. These are taken from underneath the feathers that we see in goose or duck. This part of the plume is what keeps the birds warm even in very cold weather. This is also why we fill comforters with them. Comforters down provide the most comfortable cover against cold weather.

Down comforters are preferred for their excellent thermal properties. They are also incredibly light weight. There are attempts to replicate these qualities with the use of synthetic materials. There has been some success but nothing can equal the luxurious feeling that goose or duck down offers. Price can vary widely; that is because there are different kinds of goose down. Siberian goose down is considered the best. Other kinds come from Eider ducks of Iceland. They are the warmest and have the most luxurious feel.

Designing a baby room can be fun and challenging. As excitement brews for the new addition to the family, themes nowadays can be as wild and unique as in the past. Modern baby rooms are livened up with barnyard themes, jungle and forest animals or zoo themes, compared to the usual one or two-toned nursery.

Nowadays babies cuddle up in wild and fun animal print sheets. Solid colors in yellow, pink and blue are a tad bit too boring nowadays. Furry friends like the zebra, giraffe, tiger, cow, cheetah, and leopard now make their way to the nursery room. Now isn’t that baby wild!

My sister and I furnished our own studios. We each had a daybed in addition to our queen size beds. Daybeds are practical when you have friends who visit you often. They can serve as a sofa and a bed at the same time. We promised to make our daybeds just as attractive as our beds so we each bought daybed beddings set.

Daybed beddings set come in several sizes. Just as there are several sizes for daybeds, there are daybed beddings sets for all of them. Some bedding sets are in silk and others are in cotton. They come in different colors and prints too. Some come with lace and others are as plain as they come. They all serve the same purpose: to spruce up and protect your daybed.

Choosing the Right Satin Material

The satin fabric is characterized by high luster. It is commonly used in baseball jackets, athletic shorts, women’s lingerie and evening dresses. It presents a most elegant look when used as upholstery and beddings. A satin comforter and bedding set is the most luxurious thing that can dress up a bed. Aside from luster, the fabric is also soft and velvety to the touch. It used to be exclusively made from silk but now it can be manufactured from rayon, nylon and polyester.

The downside of satin is in its maintenance. Some satin fabrics cannot take machine washing. They can only be dry-cleaned. That is alright for small items, even evening dresses. How about comforters? I guess the solution is to check the labels and look for satins that can be washed in the machine using normal detergent.

Featherbed Downside

With origins in Europe as early as the Middle Ages, featherbeds provided a different kind of sleeping experience. These were filled with goose down and were luxury items. They were naturally expensive and only the wealthy could enjoy them. It was a far cry from sacks of hay that ordinary people used. Hay had hard parts that poked into the body.

The featherbed had advantages over hay. Sacks were filled with goose feathers which were very soft. They made for more comfortable sleep but it had its downside as well. Over time, the feathers tended to bunch up in the corners. Today, featherbeds are baffled meaning they are sewn to block the quilt in squares to keep the feathers in place.

Thick & Fluffy

A down comforter resembles a thick, fluffy quilt, but is filled with down feathers from either geese or duck. Down is exceptionally light, soft, warm, and luxurious, making down bed comforters a very sought after bed covering. True down lacks a hard shaft and the fluffy filaments are “bushy” in appearance, which is what makes down so soft. Down also has the ability to hold in body heat while allowing moisture to escape, which is what is known as wicking.

A down comforter is normally labeled for its fill power. This rating relates to the quality of the down material itself. Once down is washed and sterilized, an ounce is measured to obtain the space it occupies in cubic inches. Very expensive down might have a fill rating of over 700 cubic inches, while a down with lesser quality will probably rate closer to 300. The higher the fill rating, the fluffier the down comforter will be, and the more warmth it will generally provide.
